Fruits that reduce the risk of dementia

In the past, they said that an apple a day keeps the doctor away, but a recent study has proven that apples are not the only fruit that is beneficial to human health.

A team of researchers at the University of Cincinnati, USA, found that eating blueberries in middle age may reduce the risk of developing dementia in old age.

The results of this study were published in the scientific journal "Neutrients".

And researcher Robert Krikorian says that he conducted the study on the benefits of blueberries for people who have an increased risk of developing Alzheimer's and dementia.

He added in statements reported by the website "Medical Express" that specializes in medical sciences that although blueberries are not very different from other fruits and vegetables such as red cabbage, for example, they contain a high percentage of micronutrients and antioxidants such as anthocyanins.

The research team stated that this substance is what gives blueberries its famous color, and it also helps the plant to resist radioactive substances, plant diseases and other risks, and it also has important benefits for humans such as resisting infections and improving metabolism and energy production within cells.

The experiment included 33 people from across Cincinnati, aged between 50 and 65, who suffer from obesity problems and notice a limited decline in memory efficiency with age.

And it was found through the experiment that volunteers who ate quantities of blueberries showed an improvement in mental functions during learning activities and recall information from memory.

"These findings are still exploratory, but they do reflect exciting information about the benefits of blueberries," Krikorian stressed.
