“They asked for forgiveness” .. Thieves return what they stole from a temple because of “nightmares”

A gang of thieves has returned more than a dozen statues they stole from an ancient Hindu temple in India, noting that they decided to do so because of nightmares they had had since they carried out their act, according to the police.

Police inspector Rajiv Singh told AFP that last week the group had stolen 16 statues from the 300-year-old temple of Lord Balaji.

On Monday evening, thieves brought 14 statues to the perimeter of the home of the high priest of the temple in Chitrakot district in Uttar Pradesh.

"The thieves left a letter saying that they returned the statues because of their frightening dreams," Singh said, asking for forgiveness.

One of the stolen statues was made of staddhatu, an alloy of eight metals weighing about five kilograms. The items also included silver decorations used to adorn the deities.

The identity of the thieves is not yet known.

"We could not sleep, eat, or live in peace," their letter, written in Hindi, said.

We are tired of scary dreams and we will return the precious statues.”
