A painting by Pieter Brueghel the Younger was offered at auction this Sunday in Dijon (Côte-d'Or).

Estimated between 300,000 and 500,000 euros, the painting was discovered in January 2022 during an estate, by an auctioneer and a notary, reports France 3 Bourgogne Franche-Comté.

The first had requested the expertise of a specialized firm, which confirmed that it was indeed a work by the Flemish master Pieter Brueghel the Younger, named

Winter Landscape with Skaters and Bird Trap

.

It is dated from the end of the 16th – beginning of the 17th century.

An unknown story

There would be more than 140 versions of this landscape painted by the artist.

“It is a very rare exceptional piece,” assured an expert.

However, the history of this painting remains unknown and the family who owned it do not know its origin.

"They think they've had it for three generations, but there's no record, no note about the painting in their archives," the auctioneer said.

The canvas was finally sold for 600,000 euros, or 744,000 euros including auction fees.

The buyer preferred to remain anonymous.
