One of Andy Warhol's most famous paintings - a portrait of Marilyn Monroe from 1964 - has sold for close to two billion kronor at an auction of Christie's in New York.

The painting "Shot sage blue Marilyn" is actually part of a quartet that depicts the actress Marilyn Monroe in different colors and which goes by the collective name "The shot Marilyns".

The painting was hammered for 195 million dollars, which is a new record for 20th century art.

The previous record - equivalent to almost 180 million dollars - was noted in 2015 for Pablo Picasso's "Les femmes d'Alger"
