Foreign priests in France: the great essentials

They come mostly from Africa, but also from Europe, and increasingly from Asia and Latin America: foreign priests.

Commonly called "

fidei donum

priests ", there are 2,000 in France for 5,000 French priests, or a third of the workforce.

According to a 1957 text, their mission should be of short duration, but faced with an unprecedented crisis of vocations, some remained for years.

And may never leave...
