Five years.

This is the time allowed by Elon Musk to cure tinnitus using a Neuralink chip.

The billionaire made this announcement during an exchange on Twitter on April 24.

“Is there any hope of curing tinnitus?

“asked a user.

“Absolutely,” replied the new boss of the social network.

“Maybe in less than five years,” he added, explaining that Neuralink still needed to grow to achieve this.

Definitely.

Might be less than 5 years away, as current version Neuralinks are semi-generalized neural read/write devices with ~1000 electrodes and tinnitus probably needs <<1000.

Future gen Neuralinks will increase electrode count by many orders of magnitude.

Neuralink, a brain-machine interface

Neuralink has developed a brain-machine interface.

It takes the form of a brain implant directly connected to the outer layer of the brain.

The objective is to allow its wearer to perform gestures with his only thought.

Tinnitus is caused by damage to the vestibulocochlear nerve that connects the inner ear to the brain.

Specialists have admitted that an implant could be the solution.

It still needs to be developed and tested on humans.

For now, the Neuralink implant has been housed in the skull of a pig or a monkey.

The billionaire announced in December 2021 that he intended to test the brain implant on humans in 2022. Elon Musk's company will also have to obtain authorization from the FDA, the American health authority, to dream of marketing.

Which might take some time.
