Blackwater III: The House

of Michael McDowell, published on May 5, 2022 by Éditions Monsieur Toussaint Louverture.

His favorite quote:

The rivalry between the two sisters was representative of the incredible animosity that Elinor and Mary-Love harbored towards each other.

Why this book?

  • Because this novel marks a real turning point in the

    Blackwater

saga by reshuffling the cards in a striking and effective way.

Without the reader having really paid attention to him, a new character emerges, ready to take part in the internal wars of the Caskeys… Brilliant!

  • Because the author wonderfully shows the passage of time and

changing mores, with the natural authority of the Caskeys gradually eroding… A new era is coming, will the Caskeys be part of it?

  • Because the effectiveness of the story is once again there:

the great narrative mastery of the author makes this volume, just as much (or even more!) than the previous ones, a real "page-turner".

  • Because, a detail which is not really a detail, the production

of this volume still attracts the eye: four portraits facing each other set the tone, surrounding a house with a vaguely disturbing atmosphere.

    It's beautiful and very appropriate!

The essentials in 2 minutes

The plot.

In Perdido, Alabama, the Caskey clan continues to tear itself apart: the matriarch Mary-Love tries to maintain herself at the head of the family, while Elinor waits for the moment to take the crown from her for good.

Characters.

A quartet of female characters emerge from this story: Mary-Love and Elinor pass on to the next generation, Miriam and Frances, their enmity.

Legacy hate?

We can hardly do worse...

Places.

Perdido, Alabama, is a sleepy town in the Old South, as if frozen in time.

Two rivers surround the city: dangerous, and even potentially lethal, they take a heavy toll on the small community.

The time.

The Depression sets in Perdido.

The economic crisis is hitting the city hard.

The author.

Michael McDowell has written nearly thirty books in just ten years!

His credo?

The "paperback", inexpensive paperbacks, because he liked the idea of entertaining the greatest moment.

This book was read with

a deaf anguish, because we feel that the end will be terrible...
