From a blind masseur to a trainee lawyer, the first visually impaired candidate in Guangzhou to pass the judicial examination receives a qualification certificate

He used to be a blind massage therapist for nearly 20 years, and now he is a trainee lawyer in a well-known law firm in Guangzhou CBD.

From the urban village to the office building, he has walked for a long time on this road, and he has paid hardships that are unimaginable to ordinary people.

When the dream shines into reality, he said, "It's all worth it."

He is the first visually impaired candidate Pan Mingjing to pass the law test in the Guangzhou examination area.

Recently, he finally received the long-awaited "Legal Professional Qualification Certificate" and a lawyer's internship certificate.

A year later, he will become a full-time lawyer.

Blind masseuse prepares for 4 years to pass law test

In 2003, after studying massage for the blind at a blind school in his hometown of Nanning, Guangxi, Pan Mingjing came to Guangzhou alone and became a blind massage therapist.

When enrolling in the undergraduate program of adult higher education, a basic legal course made his calm heart waver. "I like French and French very much, and the logic is clear, and I feel that I have found a direction."

So, Pan Mingjing began to prepare for the exam and pursued his dream of being a lawyer.

The National Unified Legal Profession Qualification Examination (hereinafter referred to as the "Law Exam") has a low pass rate and requires memorization of a large amount of information. For a visually impaired person, the difficulty is several times higher.

What if there is no special Braille version of the textbook?

After receiving Pan Mingjing's request for help, Guangzhou Hemu Disabled Public Welfare Innovation Center and China Braille Library issued a recruitment call. Volunteers scanned the textbooks, performed text recognition, and then proofread them. Over the past four years, more than a dozen electronic textbooks have been compiled. Over 2 million words.

Pan Mingjing never thought of giving up. As long as there were no customers in the massage shop, he listened to the law test courses and teaching materials, "taking every gap to study".

Since 2018, Pan Mingjing has participated in 6 exams (3 objective questions and 3 subjective questions) for four consecutive years.

In each exam, Pan Mingjing had to listen and read the screen first, then dictate the answers, and then someone else would type, but the exam time was the same as the general exam.

Because of this situation, in the first two exams, Pan Mingjing did not finish the exam papers.

In order to precisely control the test time, in 2021, Guangdong Provincial Zhongshan Library provided him with a venue and volunteers to help Pan Mingjing take one or two mock tests a week.

On the third test, he finally answered all the questions.

The relevant person in charge of the Judicial Examination Office of the Guangzhou Municipal Bureau of Justice told reporters that in order to facilitate the nearby reference of Panming Path, a test center with convenient transportation and barrier-free passages was specially arranged, and a separate test room was specially set up for it.

In order to solve the difficulties in the computer-based test of Panming Path, a combination of voice screen-reading software and manual-assisted reading is adopted.

Among them, in order to improve the efficiency of answering the subjective questions, invigilators with standard Mandarin pronunciation, strong transcription skills and familiarity with legal terminology were selected to assist.

  Hard work pays off.

In 2021, the results were announced, and Pan Mingjing passed the law test with a high score, becoming the first visually impaired candidate in Guangzhou to pass the "law test".

"I'm not fighting alone." Pan Mingjing thanked everyone who helped him in his circle of friends.

Aspiring to become a public interest lawyer

After the Guangzhou Lawyers Association learned about the special situation of Pan Mingjing, it opened up a "green service channel" for him, instructed Guangzhou Jinpeng Law Firm to assist him in completing the online application for internship, uploading materials, and submitting internship applications, and quickly reviewed them. Issued the "Applying Lawyer Practitioner Internship Certificate" for Pan Mingjing.

Today, Pan Mingjing has become a trainee lawyer of Guangzhou Jinpeng Law Firm, responsible for answering the legal service hotline.

"I used to think that I could only support myself, and I had no ability to help others." Pan Mingjing told reporters that when he used the legal knowledge he had learned to help others and heard the other side say "thank you, lawyer Pan", he felt very accomplished. Feeling, "very happy".

As a blind massage therapist for nearly 20 years, he sighed that if he knew the law at the beginning, he might be able to solve problems such as not signing a labor contract and arrears of wages.

Because of his own experience, Pan Mingjing hopes to provide public service legal services for the disabled in the future.

Currently in a law firm, he is trying to learn labor law-related knowledge and cases, and assist in some labor dispute mediation work.

Talking about the difficulties encountered in work, Pan Mingjing said that one is mentality, how to apply knowledge into practice requires exploration and adaptation; the other is technical, converting data into voice, "Print is no problem, The handwriting is sometimes garbled", and sometimes I can only ask my colleagues to help me look at it.

There are many difficulties, but they cannot stop Pan Mingjing from pursuing his dreams.

"Respond to kindness with kindness." Because Pan Mingjing received a lot of help in preparation for exams and work, his determination to become a public interest lawyer became stronger and stronger.

"There is mud under your feet, and there is light in your heart." From urban villages to office buildings in CBD, Pan Mingjing proves that life has infinite possibilities with his struggles.

His experience has also ignited hope for more special candidates.
