Netflix's new reality series "Young Famous and African" shows some of the African continent's biggest names in social media and the entertainment industry.

In the episodes, viewers get to see private planes, huge luxury villas and of course intrigue.

The participants come from Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda.

According to executive producer Adelaide Joshua Hill, the series helps to show the outside world a new side of several African countries that often end up in the shadow of reporting on crime, poverty and corruption.

- Yes, we have problems but let's see everything else as well.

Let's look at our inventors, fashion designers and creative people as well.

We want to show what is good too, she says.

Netflix buys its first African reality series

Young, Famous and African is the first African reality series to be purchased by Netflix, which means a large global spread.

But more locally, the South African platform Showmax has long invested in reality series from the African continent.

One of Showmax's latest reality series is The Real Housewives of Lagos, which is a Nigerian version of the famous "Real Housewives" concept from the USA.

The plot is similar to Young, Famous and African except that it focuses on famous women in Lagos.

- This series means that we can put Lagos in a more positive light and show Lagos to the world, and the opportunities that exist here, says Laura Ikeji, entrepreneur and participant in the series.

In addition to "The real housewives of Lagos", there are also two South African editions in the cities of Durban and Johannesburg on Showmax.

Other titles are "Temptation Island South Africa", "Big brother Naija" and "Date my family: Kenya".
