A tragedy occurred Monday afternoon around 3:30 p.m. on the construction site of the Saint-Brieuc wind farm (Côtes d'Armor).

While walking along the water's edge on Caroual beach in Erquy, a 70-year-old woman fell into a canal.

She drowned despite the rapid arrival of a witness to pull her out of the water.

“From the first elements collected, it appeared that this person was walking by the sea, at low tide, in the water at mid-calf.

On this occasion, she fell into a canal, filled with water, with a depth of between 4 and 6 meters and with an almost immediate difference in height, ”says the public prosecutor Nicolas Heitz.

The latter opened an investigation for "manslaughter", which he entrusted to the Pléneuf-Val-André brigade accompanied by the Research Section of the Maritime Gendarmerie.

According to the prosecutor, the victim was walking alone, while her daughter and her father were a little apart.

The rapid intervention of a witness and attempts at resuscitation failed to save his life.

The autopsy confirmed the hypothesis of death by drowning.

“An inventory of signaling measures” soon to be carried out

The pit into which the walker fell was made as part of the landfall work for the offshore wind farm connection project. Two adjoining channels were dug over a width of 60 meters and a length of 250 meters.

If one of the channels was partially filled, the other had to be "after the intervention of the divers to anchor the cables by ballasting them", specifies the magistrate.

The investigation will have to determine the circumstances of the tragedy but particular attention will be paid to the safety device put in place by the manufacturer.

“An inventory of the signage and safety measures put in place on the site will be carried out”, promises the prosecutor.
