In our podcast Minute Papillon!, we wonder.

While Emmanuel has just been elected President of the Republic, all eyes are on the next deadline: the legislative elections.

Marine Le Pen and Jean-Luc Mélenchon are betting a lot on this election.

This is because the issue is important.

These elections make it possible to elect deputies who will create and vote on laws and will, in particular, have the role of counter-power vis-à-vis the government.

But despite the very good presidential score of these candidates, nothing guarantees them to perform in the legislative elections.

Example: in 2017, after having obtained 10 million presidential votes in the second round of the presidential election, Marine Le Pen failed in the legislative elections and only obtained eight deputies out of 577. A derisory figure compared to the 102 members of the Republicans.

Why, like Marine Le Pen, do many candidates perform in the presidential election but fail in the legislative elections?

Parties without local roots

To answer this question, we welcome researcher Christèle Lagier, lecturer in political science at the University of Avignon.

According to her, “the Rassemblement National and France Insoumise are parties that are only embodied by their leader.

But the legislative, unlike the presidential, are more local elections which must be embodied by 577 people.

In this episode of Presidential Minute, we will seek to understand why, on the contrary, the Socialist Party performs in the legislative elections than in the presidential elections.

We will talk about candidates without major historical parties like Eric Zemmour, Jean Lassalle or Nicolas Dupont-Aignan.
