A man who ran over and seriously injured two German divers with his motorboat off the coast of Mallorca in 2018 has been sentenced to two years in prison on the Spanish holiday island.

In her verdict, the responsible judge said on Monday in Palma that the accused had acted with serious negligence because he had been traveling at excessive speed in an area with many ships and some swimmers and divers, as the newspaper "Diario de Mallorca" cited reported to legal circles.

The accused must also compensate the two victims with a total of 1.8 million euros, it said.

A judicial spokesman confirmed the information on request.

The convicted man is a Mallorcan police officer.

He is the husband of a well-known island politician who was on board at the time of the accident.

According to official information, the man can appeal the verdict.

Originally, the public prosecutor's office had demanded six years' imprisonment.

The incident happened on the evening of July 27, 2018, around 300 meters off the coast of Es Trenc beach in southern Mallorca, which is very popular with tourists.

The man at the helm of the motorboat was traveling at a speed of about 20 knots - about 37 kilometers per hour - when he ran over the two tourists around 7:30 p.m.

An arm was severed from a then 20-year-old man, and the doctors had to amputate a leg of his six-year-old companion.

The prosecutor and experts said at the trial that a speed of about three knots would have been appropriate in such a busy area near the coast.
