A slight increase in activity was noted under Mount Pelée, in Martinique, last week.

According to the Institute of Earth Physics in Paris and the OVSM (Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Martinique), "at least 51 volcano-tectonic earthquakes of magnitude less than or equal to 1.0", were recorded between 22 and 29 april.

According to this weekly report relayed by Martinique la 1re, 24 of these low-energy earthquakes took place on the same day, Thursday, April 28.

No earthquake felt by residents

The previous week, only 14 earthquakes had been recorded, specifies the daily

This time, the tremors "were located inside the volcanic edifice between 0.7 and 1.4 km deep below the surface".

The OVSM also specifies that "this superficial seismicity of the volcano-tectonic type is associated with the formation of microfractures in the volcanic edifice".

However, none of the earthquakes were felt by the population.

Despite everything, the alert level is still in yellow vigilance.
