A hurricane that destroyed more than 1,000 buildings in south-central Kansas, USA, generated winds of about 265 kilometers per hour, and "opened a path" for destruction along about 20 kilometers.

The National Weather Service said the hurricane, which began on Friday, caused extensive damage in the suburbs of Wichita, the largest city in the state of Kansas in the southeast, leaving some injured, including civil defense personnel.

An official in one suburb of the city said that between 300 and 400 buildings were completely destroyed, and this is part of the 1,074 buildings destroyed by the hurricane in all.

The official added that Andover would need years to recover from the storm's damage.

And the weather service had reported since the end of the week that the hurricane passed through the Andover suburb for only 21 minutes.

By Sunday, the relevant authorities had restored power to about 15,000 people who had been cut off by the storm.

According to the company operating in the area (Evergy), there are still fewer than 1,000 people without energy in the Wichita area.
