The toll of bad weather that occurred overnight from Friday to Saturday in Guadeloupe is increasing.

They left two dead and one missing, the prefecture said on Saturday.

The two victims, two men including a 61-year-old, were found in their vehicle, said the prefecture, which had reported one death in a previous report.

A third person, a 30-year-old young man according to local media, was also missing, and "searches to find him remain fruitless at this stage", added the administration.

The situation “tends to stabilize”

In total, "80 firefighters were hired during the afternoon, in order to provide assistance to the victims and carry out reconnaissance", according to the prefecture, which also specifies that the area of ​​Pointe-à-Pitre, the hardest affected by bad weather, "tends to stabilize".

Saturday evening, traffic returned to normal, with however still some “significant difficulties” in certain sectors, including a risk of landslides in the town of Gosier.

The prefecture also expected a restoration of electricity to all homes in the evening.

Exceptional rainfall occurred overnight from Friday to Saturday.

"The rainfall exceeded 300 mm, a phenomenon greater than that recorded during Cyclone Maria" in 2017.
