"Wii sports" was released in 2006 and became the biggest game for Nintendo's innovative console.

More than 15 years later, the Japanese game developer hopes for a new success.

When Nintendo released its console Wii, it was like a sprained company in desperate need of a sales success.

The predecessor Gamecube did not reach the sales figures of previous consoles, and Nintendo also lost market share to Sony in particular.

33 million copies sold

But the Wii was a success, largely thanks to "Wii sports", which took advantage of the motion-sensitive controls and allowed players to compete in a number of sports such as bowling and baseball.

About three quarters of Wii players owned "Wii sports" and in addition, the game meant that console gaming found its way to places where it had previously been a rare sight, such as nursing homes.

The game itself often came with the console when purchased, but also the sequel "Wii sports resort" sold 33 million copies and became the third most popular game for the console.

Released on Friday

When "Nintendo Switch sports" is released on April 29, Nintendo hopes to bring the dormant series and genre to life.

The program includes football, volleyball, bowling, tennis, badminton and sword fencing, which can be played alone or with others - locally or online.

This autumn, golf will also be added.

Those who buy the physical version of the game get a strap to attach the hand control to the leg for kicking football.

The reviewers who got their hands on the game mostly seem to be happy, but it remains to be seen if the game achieves the same success as its predecessors.
