With the phrases "Happy Birthday" in Italian and English, the US military gave an Italian woman a birthday cake yesterday, instead of the one that American soldiers ate when they entered her town during one of the last battles of World War II.

Meri Myon, who celebrated her 90th birthday on Friday, shed tears when she received the cake at a party in Vicenza, northwest of Venice.

The event marks the anniversary of the day the 88th Infantry Division made its way into the city on April 28, 1945.

According to the US Army, Mion spent that night with her mother hiding in the attic of their farm in the nearby village of San Pietro, the retreating German soldiers were shooting at the house, and when Mion woke up on the morning of her thirteenth birthday, American soldiers were close by.

The U.S. Army Garrison in Italy said Mione's mother had prepared a birthday cake for her and left it on a windowsill to cool, but she had disappeared—apparently by hungry American soldiers who were greeted by Italian citizens with wine and bread as they entered Vicenza along the main road.

According to "Sky News Arabia", Mayon seemed surprised that American soldiers returned the cake after 77 years, and she was overjoyed when a small crowd including American leaders and Italian officials sang "Happy Birthday."

"We will eat this dessert with all my family to bring back to me this wonderful day that I will never forget," Myon said, according to the US military.
