The 8-meter-high statue under the People's Friendship Arch monument in Kyiv was demolished on Tuesday.

The titanium and bronze sculpture was erected in 1982 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Soviet Union and has symbolized the friendship between Russia and Ukraine.

But now the 40-year-old statue is being taken down in response to Russia's invasion of the country, according to the city's mayor.

One in line to be demolished

But the symbol of friendship is not the only one to experience the demolition ball.

In the city of Ternopil - located in western Ukraine - a statue portraying the Russian author and national poet Alexander Pushkin has been demolished.

It was earlier in April that the city authorities chose to take down the monument after it was drowned in red and adorned with anti-war messages.
