Historically when the Golden Lion was awarded at the Venice Biennale

The American Simone Leigh was awarded the golden lion for the work "Brick House", which welcomes visitors to the large exhibition hall Arsenale, a giant bronze bust depicting a woman without eyes.

Sonia Boyce received the golden lion for the exhibition "Feeling Her Way" at the British pavilion.

A video and voice work with five female black musicians from the UK.

It is the first time in the Venice Biennale's 127-year history that the prize goes to a black woman.

In addition, it is the first time that black female artists represent the United States and the United Kingdom at the biennial.

The Venice Art Biennale runs until November 27.
