A new study has just opened up new prospects for screening and curing prostate cancer.

A study by British researchers has just been published in the journal

European Urology Oncology

, reports Europe 1.

Scientists have discovered that five bacteria are involved in the rapid spread of the disease.

The bacteria are present in men suffering from this cancer who participated in the study.

According to the researchers, patients with these bacteria would be 2.6 times more likely to see their cancer progress from the early stage to the advanced stage.

New treatments to consider

This is the first link established between the disease, which affects 50,000 men a year in France, and bacteria.

At this time, the study has not established a causal link and it is not known whether the bacteria cause prostate cancer or simply make it worse.

Future results will have an important impact on treatments and screening methods.

If these bacteria are the cause of prostate cancer, antibiotic treatment could even be considered to get rid of them.

Depending on the results of future studies, tests could be developed to determine which men are most at risk and thus prevent many deaths.
