Blackwater II: the dike
by Michael McDowell, published on April 22, 2022 by Éditions Monsieur Toussaint Louverture.
His favorite quote:
Perdido, Alabama, owes its name to one of the two rivers that overlook it;
the other is called the Blackwater.
It is not good to bathe at their confluence, and the waters have never returned the bodies of those who find themselves trapped there.
Why this book?
Because fifteen days after the
release of volume 1
,
this second volume is objectively even more beautiful than the previous one.
It is undeniably a beautiful object, with careful manufacture, a jewel for your library!
Because the strength of this story lies in its characters
, especially female.
Michael McDowell introduces new protagonists in this volume, and gives more depth to those described in
The Flood
.
Just for the pleasure of seeing Sister emerge and stand up to the tyrannical matriarch of the Caskeys, it's a real treat!
Because the novel describes with precision and realism
the daily life of a small town in the southern United States in the early 1920s, after the trauma of the Great War but before the terrible economic recession of 1929. Like a snapshot taken on the lively !
Because Michael McDowell manages to infuse his family
and historical saga with just the right amount of fantasy and macabre: his series of novels are reminiscent of Stephen King at his best!
The essentials in 2 minutes
The plot.
Blackwater follows the story of the Caskey family over several generations, from the terrible flood that ravaged their town in 1919. But from this tragedy also emerged the mysterious Elinor, a sort of vengeful spirit from the waters of Blackwater, determined to integrate into the Caskey clan.
Characters.
In this series, the female characters shine in particular, in the forefront of which the matriarch Mary-Love, a formidable cliché of a tyrannical stepmother, and Elinor, between charisma and cruelty, who is absolutely not what she seems to be...
Places.
Perdido is a small town in Alabama, in the Deep South of the United States.
A place where racism remains latent, where prejudices die hard... a city still deeply rooted in the past.
The time.
This second novel describes the advent of the 1920s in Perdido.
But the Roaring Twenties seem far away for the reasonable inhabitants of the small town!
The author.
Michael McDowell is a prolific American author, best known for his soap operas.
This book was read with
enthusiasm and passion… Can't wait for the sequel!
