A 26-year-old man died on Saturday after being shot by a policeman whom he threatened with a knife, we learned from the prosecution on Sunday.

The man "targeted by the criminal investigation of attempted murder of police officers from the Blois police station died (Saturday) at the Blois hospital center", announced the Blois prosecutor Frédéric Chevallier, in a press release.

“In order to determine the exact causes of his death, an autopsy was decided by the Blois prosecution in charge of the investigation.

It will be carried out on Tuesday April 26, 2022 afternoon at the forensic institute of Tours, ”added the same source.

The prosecution had indicated Friday evening that "in the state of the investigations", the shooting of the police officer was "analyzed as entering into a case of self-defense to an attack by an armed man".

No political or religious claims

This man was wandering Thursday around 10 p.m. in the streets of Blois, armed with a knife, the prosecution had indicated on Friday.

The police asked him to drop his weapon when the individual was at the entrance to a residence for seniors, but he walked towards them, threatening.

The latter used a taser, then LBD shots (defense ball launcher), without effect, according to the prosecution.

“On the contrary, the individual was advancing towards the police”, underlined the prosecutor adding, “at this time, a police officer was using his service weapon, a Sig Sauer 9mm, four times”.

Hit by a shot in the chest, the man could only be controlled after a final LBD shot.

He was hospitalized with a vital prognosis.

The young man, Moroccan, unknown to the police and justice services, had resided in France since September 2021 and had a student visa.

For several days he "knew anxieties, of undetermined origins", according to the prosecution, who specified that "no word" had "been uttered" which could have "could have been linked to political or religious demands".
