Life imprisonment for a Turkish man who killed a woman in the street with a samurai sword

The Turkish court in Istanbul has approved a life sentence for a man convicted of killing a woman with a samurai sword last November, an incident that sparked a global wave of controversy.

The Turkish Anadolu Agency said the suspect was convicted of premeditated murder with "brutal intent and torture".

Life imprisonment is the most severe possible since Turkey abolished the death penalty in 2002, as it does not offer any chance of parole.

Security camera footage showed that on November 9, the accused, Goktog Boz, attacked the 28-year-old architect, Basak Cengiz, with a samurai sword, as she was walking in the street in the Atasehir district of Istanbul.

Cengiz died later in the hospital.

According to local media reports, the attacker and the victim did not know each other.
