The exhibition, made in collaboration with the Presidential Office of Ukraine and the Ministry of Culture, shows the work of contemporary Ukrainian artists while highlighting Ukrainian history and culture with the support of international artists.

President Volodymyr Zelensky himself contributes a picture to the exhibition, a personal quote written over the Ukrainian flag: "We defend our freedom."

He will also speak at Thursday night's inauguration.

In early March, the Venice Art Biennale decided that artists with ties to the Russian government are not welcome this year.

At the same time, the management of the prestigious international exhibition of contemporary art announced that the message does not apply to all Russian artists.

"For those who oppose the current Russian regime, there will always be room for the biennial's exhibitions," the biennial wrote in a statement.
