Achieving “Gender Equality” that Eliminates Gender Equality April 21, 13:09

This time, we will consider "gender equality" with the entrance exam questions given at junior high school as the entrance.

Challenge the problem!

This question is the entrance exam question for Kaisei Junior High School.

It is a problem in 2022, a boys' school that is said to be extremely difficult.

Problem

As efforts to realize a gender-equal society are being promoted, the problem of unconscious bias has been pointed out.

What kind of unconscious bias do you think is behind the behavior below?

"Eh? I'm a mother,

but I'm a single person? I'm sorry for my child."

(Excerpt from the May 2021 issue of the Gender Equality Bureau "Joint Participation"

)

An example of the answer would be "Unconscious bias that mothers should live and raise their children."

In this entrance examination question, this part is an unconscious belief that "the mother should be like this".

“Gender equality” for entrance exam questions

We spoke with Kyota Inuzuka, a professor at the University of Shizuoka, who has been studying gender sociology for about 30 years.

What was your impression of being asked the entrance exam questions for junior high school this time?

Mr. Inuzuka

"It is very meaningful that boys have the opportunity to think about these problems. Can men change this to their own problems or to society as a whole, including themselves ?"

It is very important to be aware of the problems that must be addressed from an early stage. I am keenly aware that the times have changed. "

Sabae City working toward realization

Gender equality, which means sharing responsibilities, rights and opportunities equally, regardless of gender.

There are cities that are working to achieve this.

Sabae City, Fukui Prefecture, has the highest female employment rate in Japan.

We talked to Samantha Kawaguchi, who moved to Sabae City and is working toward gender equality with city officials as a regional revitalization cooperation team.

Mr. Kawaguchi

"It is said that Sabae City is a city of manufacturing, and since it has historically been a natural environment for women to work, gender equality may have penetrated quite a bit. It is called" Sabae 38 Group "by the city. It is a network for corporate leaders in Sabae City to create an environment where women can work more comfortably and share information. "

Twenty-nine companies in the city have participated in the "Sabae 38 Group", which was launched on March 8th in 2021, on International Women's Day.

While exchanging information such as "actively hiring women who are raising children" and "making it easier for men to take childcare leave," we are trying to make good use of each other's efforts.

Mr. Kawaguchi says that while he feels a certain response through lectures, there are still issues to be solved.

Mr. Kawaguchi

"Women still spend more time doing housework. According to recent data, women are about three times as many as men. Nearly 10 years ago, it was five times, so the difference has narrowed, but there is still a considerable disparity. There are still some issues left, but I have to get up and become a role model for everyone. I hope that people around me will put more effort into it. "

Reasons that are urgently required

Inuzuka, who has been studying for many years, is paying attention to changes in young men's awareness of work and family life.

It is said that the survey conducted by Shizuoka City in 2021 gave surprising results.

In response to the question "what do you want to prioritize in your life?"

Mr. Inuzuka

"0% of men in their teens, 20s, and 30s answered that they wanted to give priority to work."

9% of men in their 50s said they wanted to prioritize work, but none in their 30s or younger.

In addition, nearly 40% of men in their 30s said they wanted to prioritize family life.

How do you analyze the background of such changes in young men at this stage?

Mr. Inuzuka

"We are in an era where even if we sacrifice ourselves and our family and devote ourselves to the company, we will not be rewarded or guaranteed. Isn't it a big factor that it is no longer possible? The criteria for selecting a company have completely changed, so it is a problem that the company quickly noticed it and how to properly secure excellent human resources, it took survival. I think it's important to have that kind of sense of crisis. "

In "Migake, Curiosity!" Of "Weekly Maru-Knowledge News" (broadcast at 8:25 am on Sunday), we will delve into the news every week on the subject of current affairs given in the entrance examination.

Let's think of "why?", In fact, "in the first place" that you want to know as a Kamakura caster.
