Hematopoietic stem cells "gallop" thousands of miles to treat patients

It took more than eight hours from Hangzhou to Binzhou, and it has been injected into the recipient's body.

From collection to delivery, it took 13 hours and 35 minutes, spanning thousands of miles from Hangzhou to Binzhou.

At 10:35 in the middle of the night on April 18, Jiang Bo, a staff member of the China Marrow Bank, handed over the hematopoietic stem cells collected that day to Liu Rentong, bringing hope of regeneration to the 17-year-old patient with aplastic anemia.

Collection is ideal

The patient has great hope of recovery

In April 2021, a 17-year-old patient in Binzhou went to the Affiliated Hospital of Binzhou Medical University due to fatigue and bleeding spots on the skin. After a comprehensive examination, he was diagnosed with severe aplastic anemia.

According to Liu Rentong, deputy chief physician of the Department of Hematology at the Affiliated Hospital of Binhai Medical University, according to the condition, aplastic anemia is generally treated by drugs or hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

"In the early stage, this patient went to Beijing for treatment. The experts in Beijing suggested haploid hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, but the family did not accept it considering the risks of rejection. Later, after half a year of drug treatment, the effect was not good, and the It was decided to adopt hematopoietic stem cell transplantation." Liu Rentong told reporters.

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation can be divided into autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is divided into homozygous siblings (preferred, mainly between siblings), haploid transplantation (also known as haploidentical transplantation, between parents and children, etc., rejection and cost are slightly higher than homozygous) , Transplantation from unrelated donors (searched by the Chinese Bone Marrow Bank, the rejection after transplantation is between homozygous and haploidentical).

"Fortunately, we found a fully matched donor for this patient in the China Marrow Bank. After further comparison, the conditions were very ideal. After the China Marrow Bank communicated with the donor, the other party was very cooperative. All of these, let us see Hope has come." Liu Rentong said that the collection and transplantation were originally scheduled to be carried out a month ago, but the sudden epidemic made the transplant temporarily put on hold.

Since the patient's condition was not suitable for any further delay, the collection and transplantation procedure was restarted.

"Before the collection, we have pretreated the patient. After chemotherapy and other methods, the patient's bone marrow has been completely emptied, and the immune system has been completely suppressed, waiting for the successful collection of hematopoietic stem cells for transplantation. Now, the collection situation is very ideal, The patient's hope of recovery is very high." Liu Rentong said.

collection, transport, injection

  no delay

At 10:35 p.m. on April 18, under the leadership of the Binzhou traffic police department, a car with Jinan license plate stopped in front of the emergency department of the Affiliated Hospital of Binzhou Medical College. The hematopoietic stem cells were personally handed over to Liu Rentong.

"Thank you! This is the hope of life." Liu Rentong held Jiang Bo's hand tightly.

"The collection was carried out at Zhejiang Provincial People's Hospital. It started at 9 am today (18th) and continued until 1 pm. At 2 pm, my colleague took hematopoietic stem cells from Hangzhou to Hefei by high-speed rail, and then transferred to Jinan. At 8:30 in the evening, I drove a relay from Jinan West Railway Station to Binzhou. The whole process went very smoothly without any delay." Jiang Bo said.

The reporter learned that the donor was from Hangzhou, Zhejiang, and had no previous intersection with the recipient in Binzhou.

A total of 220 ml of hematopoietic stem cells connected Hangzhou and Binzhou, which are thousands of miles apart.

At 11:10 that night, hematopoietic stem cells began to be injected into the recipient, and the infusion was successfully completed at 0:50 the next day, bringing hope to the patient for rebirth.

Previously, many people in Binzhou have donated hematopoietic stem cells to China Bone Marrow Bank as donors.

According to the data of China Bone Marrow Bank, more than 1 million people in the whole country are waiting for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Among them, the number of people who can rely on successful matching between relatives is very small, so more people need to find matching people in non-blood relationship.

Liu Rentong expressed the hope that more people will join the hematopoietic stem cell donation volunteer team so that more people can benefit.
