Amazon plans to increase the capacity of its portfolio of renewable energy projects by 30% by launching 37 new programs around the world, always with the objective of supplying 100% clean energy by 2025. With these new projects, Amazon will be able to count on a total of 15.7 gigawatts and thus consolidates its position as the company buying the most renewable energy in the world, says a press release.

"Given the growth of our business and our goal to power our business 100% with renewable energy, we are not slowing down our investments" in the sector, said the company's chief executive, Andy Jassy.

The e-commerce giant, which must manage the transport of all its goods, has also become a major provider of dematerialized computing services, which operate using servers that require a lot of energy.

Another important step toward our mission of running Amazon's global operations on 100% renewable energy by 2025 – 5 years ahead of our initial goal.

The group pledged in 2019 to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040, sometimes encountering skepticism from organizations fighting against global warming due to the company's very high carbon footprint.

With the rise of online shopping and working from home since the start of the pandemic, the group's emissions have thus fallen from 44.4 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year in 2018 to 60.64 million in 2020, an increase of 37% in two years.

The 37 new renewable energy projects announced on Wednesday are located in the United States, Spain, France, Australia, Canada, India, Japan and the United Arab Emirates.

With these programs, the group will have a total of 134 wind turbine or solar panel sites and 176 photovoltaic roofs.

Amazon does not provide details on the financial terms of these projects.
