If you don't have to have attended Polytechnique to understand that an SUV is much more polluting than a small city car, are the CO₂ emissions of vehicles systematically proportional to their size?

Well yes, since those of a light utility are more than twice as high as those of a small car (which represents a difference of approximately 2,000 kilograms of CO₂ per year for 15,000 km travelled).

“Boosted” popularity in times of conflict

According to the Statista Mobility Market Outlook, large SUVs are also among the models that emit the most carbon dioxide.

This is bad news since these "monsters" are on the rise with global sales which have increased by 10% in 2021 (and downright 45.5% in Europe!).

To reverse this climaticidal trend, the European Union has established stricter limits for the emissions of newly registered passenger cars: since 2021, the level has been set at a maximum of 95 g CO₂/km for the entire car fleet in Europe. .

If they do not respect this new rule, the manufacturers expose themselves to a fine and should therefore produce less polluting cars.

Note that from 2030, the emissions limit will be lowered to 61.75 CO₂/km.
