France Télévisions and the BBC invite the French to elect their "favorite book", without "any pre-established list", as part of a vast unprecedented operation in France, unveiled on Tuesday before a television program this fall.

“We all have a book that has marked us more than another in our life and this is an opportunity to let it be known,” explained Géry Leymergie, deputy director general in charge of BBC Studios France content.

Inspired by a British format, the operation, which rides on the renewed interest in reading observed during the first confinement of 2020, will take place in three phases, in partnership with

Le Parisien

, France Bleu and TikTok, according to a press release. .

The first 50 books selected for a final vote

Ahead of the Paris Book Festival (from April 22 to 24, of which France Télévisions is a partner), and until May 18, French people aged 7 and over are invited to indicate on the website ftvetvous.fr/livrefavori their three favorite books, which only need to have been published in French to be eligible.

Then, from July 18 to September 4, 50 personalities will present the first 50 most cited books in short programs broadcast on the antennas of France Télévisions, viewers being once again called upon to vote online based on this ranking.

The final result will be presented during an early evening broadcast on France 2 this fall.

In the United Kingdom, where the concept was born, the program “The Big Read” revealed in 2003 a final ranking “very eclectic since “1984” by George Orwell rubbed shoulders with “Pride and prejudice” by Jane Austen, “Harry Potter” by JK Rowling as well as "Winnie the Pooh" by Alan Alexander Milne",

The Lord of the Rings

by JRR Tolkien occupying the first place in the hearts of the British, according to Géry Leymergie.

“Our ambition is to offer great popular entertainment,” summarized Michel Field, culture and live performance director at France Télévisions.

At a time when streaming platforms and social networks share the attention of readers and viewers, it is a question of "establishing links", he believes, recalling that "thousands of young people have rushed to bookstores to discover Maurice Leblanc after Omar Sy's "Lupin" on Netflix!
