Young people are very afraid of how they are going to finance their training and studies.

Especially since the Corona crisis.

This is the result of a current Forsa survey commissioned by the KKH Kaufmänninsche Krankenkasse among 1000 respondents.

With the Bafög reform, trainees and students will receive more money in the coming school year and winter semester.

This seems to be urgently needed because, according to the survey, it is a heavy burden on the financing of training and studies.

A third of the 16 to late 20-year-olds surveyed fear financial deficits in the coming months.

One in eight is therefore even very worried.

This is mainly due to the pandemic, because many student jobs, for example in gastronomy, were lost during the crisis.

In addition, some parents could no longer support their children as usual due to professional problems caused by the crisis.

According to the Deutsches Studentenwerk (DSW), the Bafög reform is long overdue, and state aid should have been expanded in recent years and adapted to new realities of life.

Corona is such a new reality of life that hits young people particularly hard, namely in a crucial phase of their lives: between school and work, between looking for a partner and starting a family.

If there is a risk of financial collapse, this is an additional burden.

According to the survey, worries about money hit those who already feel stressed out by the Corona crisis in particular: 40 percent of them are worried about financial problems, and one in six is even very worried.

Bafög plans of the traffic light

Many of the 16 to late 20-year-olds are also burdened by the uncertainty regarding their learning progress in training and studies.

65 percent of those surveyed fear that it will be difficult to plan important internships and semesters abroad in the coming months.

Almost half are also worried about having to catch up on learning material, so that their training or studies will be delayed.

The loss of security and planning stresses students in particular, since their everyday structures are less stable than those of schoolchildren and professionals.

The crisis is particularly threatening this target group, because the training and study period is already characterized by challenging changes and transition processes without Corona.

In this phase of life, health and risk-taking behavior also develops, which can be closely linked to the development of a mental disorder.

The Bundestag and Bundesrat still have to decide on the new Bafög law.

According to the plans of the traffic light coalition, this reform is only the first step.

The Bafög should become more independent of parents in the long term by paying the planned basic child security directly to students.

696 students and 305 trainees were questioned in the survey.

According to the Federal Statistical Office, there are 2.9 million students (winter semester 2020/21) and 1.3 million trainees (2020) in Germany.
