According to the owner, the operator of the Essen multi-storey car park, which was the scene of a fatal car crash on Easter Sunday, was informed of the irregularities and deficiencies.

"The operator was informed about the problems in connection with cleanliness and unauthorized persons entering the car park," said the Catholic Clinic Essen (KKE) as the owner on Wednesday.

“But the operator did not initiate any countermeasures.” The contract with the external company was terminated at the turn of the year.

A 19-year-old man from Essen without a driver's license and a 16-year-old from Herner had broken through a barrier with a car on Easter Sunday evening on the first level of a multi-storey car park in Essen-Borbeck for reasons that are still unclear.

They fell in the vehicle more than 15 meters and died.

Due to the current situation, the security precautions in the parking garage have been tightened, reported KKE GmbH.

The security service had been expanded to 24 hours "including access control".

Since the beginning of the year, a security service has been tasked with checking and inspecting the floors of the building during the evening and night hours.

The multi-storey car park can actually only be used by a fixed group of registered long-term tenants.

"Unauthorized access is clearly prohibited by the signage in the access areas."

Since the termination of the operating company, work has been carried out "to improve the situation", the KKE assured.

Among other things, there were tenders for new roller shutters and a barrier system.

The Catholic Clinic was shocked by the tragic death of the two young people and expressed its condolences to their families and friends.

"We are in contact with the authorities and support them fully," the statement said.

Police investigations into the background to the car crash are ongoing.
