In the civil trial between ex-husbands Johnny Depp (58) and Amber Heard (35), the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star took the witness stand for the first time on Tuesday.

"My goal is the truth," Depp said in court in Fairfax County, Virginia.

He wants to clear his name for himself and his children and defend himself against "terrible" allegations.

He was "obsessed" with bringing the truth to light.

Depp accused his former wife of making false statements in a 2018 op-ed by the Washington Post on domestic violence.

He is demanding around 50 million dollars (equivalent to a good 45 million euros) in damages for defamation.

The actress is seeking $100 million in damages for defamation.

The trial began last week with jury selection and testimony including the actors' assistants, a doctor and a marriage counselor.

In addition to Depp and Heard, other prominent witnesses are expected in the trial, which lasts several weeks, including Tesla boss Elon Musk and actors Paul Bettany and James Franco.

Depp and Heard married in 2015 but split after just 15 months of marriage.

In a process in London, the two already faced each other in 2020.

Depp had sued the Sun tabloid over an article alleging he physically abused Heard.

After a week-long war of roses with fierce allegations, Depp suffered a defeat and the lawsuit was dismissed.

The majority of the allegations mentioned in the newspaper turned out to be true, the judges had determined in their verdict.
