Why this book?

  • Because this novel is a fine and very fair observation

of the world of workers from the 1970s to the 1980s. All of them have nicknames, habits that set them apart from friends and that accompany their personality.

When one stops, those who remain are sad.

They support each other, know each other, help each other, discuss.

We rediscover all the problems related to deindustrialization, the asbestos scandal and the pain for the employees when the closure is advanced.

  • Because the story is very lively, the short sentences

    give a good rhythm.

Narval is an endearing character who shares several years of his life with the reader, the text is written in the first person.

The writing of Christian Astolfi is delicate, poetic, it is both sober and precise.

Everything is said in a few words because they are beautifully chosen and hit the mark.

    I liked it very much.

This collection is edifying, we realize what these men experienced, what carried them or killed them.

With them the word fraternity takes on its full meaning.

  • Because Le Bruit du Monde editions have just arrived

on the publishing market and it is important to make small houses known.

Especially when it offers authors the possibility of transmitting interesting and moving novels to us.

The essentials in 2 minutes

The plot.

Narval and his colleagues work at the shipyards of La Seyne-sur-Mer.

One day the closing is announced.

In addition, the asbestos scandal appears.

A whole universe is collapsing.

Characters.

Narval and his shipyard colleagues, his girlfriend, his father.

Places.

The shipyards of La Seyne-sur-Mer and the places around frequented by each other.

The time.

From 1970 to 1980.

The author.

Born in Toulon into a working-class family, Christian Astolfi was 16 when he entered the Arsenal Maritime as an apprentice.

He then joined the world of education.

He is behind the creation of the Lycée despossibles, which offers young people who have dropped out of school an educational alternative.

This book has been read with

great interest in the history of these men and their workplace.

I was conquered by the sensitive writing of the author who gives life to his story so much that it seems autobiographical.
