Cases of leptospirosis are exploding in Reunion.

Since the beginning of the year, nearly 99 cases have been identified.

A total of 18 people were hospitalized in intensive care and one person died.

The ARS called for caution on Tuesday via a press release.

Contaminated people may experience fever, muscle and joint pain, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting or even headaches.

Moisture transmission

These symptoms are often similar to those of Covid-19 or Dengue fever, explains La Première.

According to the authorities, this increase in cases may have been caused by the heavy rains of the past few weeks.

This disease is in fact transmitted through contact with a damp environment contaminated by rat urine.

The cases identified are linked to the practice of gardening and animal husbandry, as well as freshwater recreation.

Most of the infected people had unprotected wounds or did not have sufficient dressings.
