Incidents occurred Saturday afternoon in Rennes during a banned gathering while an authorized demonstration against racism and fascism took place without incident, in another part of the city, we learned from Prefecture.

During these incidents, in the heart of old Rennes on a square with several café terraces, "construction barriers were thrown at the police without causing injuries", according to the prefecture.

A prohibited gathering maintained despite the prefecture's ban

The approximately 300 demonstrators, according to the same source, were "dispersed by the police who had to use means of intermediate forces (tear gas grenades)".

A call for a rally, not officially declared, had been maintained despite the ban announced Friday by the prefecture.

"Also, in view of the proven risks to public order and following the inadmissible violence and degradation committed by individuals from the Rennes ultra-left" last Sunday, after the announcement of the results of the first round of the presidential election, " the undeclared protest rally in the prefecture of the ultra-left structure of Rennes (…) is prohibited”, indicated this press release.

At the same time, a procession, led in particular by a “Collective of support for exiled people”, gathered around 800 people, according to the prefecture.

Initially prohibited, this demonstration, which took place without incident, was finally authorized after modification of its course, approved this time by the prefecture.
