In 2019, the director of "Les Misérables" Ladj Ly had sued for defamation of the two far-right magazines "Valeurs Actuelles" and "Causeur".

The court delivered its verdict this week and acquitted the two publications, which had mistakenly announced that Ladj Ly had been "prisoned for complicity in murder".

Two magazines that were sued for defamation by an artist have just been released.

Valeurs Actuelles

and

Causeur

had been sued by director Ladj Ly for defamation.

The case dates back to December 2019: while the filmmaker was selected to represent France at the Oscars with his film

Les Misérables

, the

Causeur

website published an article entitled "Ladj Ly was imprisoned for complicity in murder".

This article was then taken up by the weekly

An error pointed out by the court

Following the publication of this article, which had been rectified the next day, Ladj Ly had filed a complaint for defamation.

If the director was sentenced in 2011 to three years in prison for "kidnapping and forcible confinement", he has never been convicted of complicity in attempted murder.

This week, the court delivered its verdict and dismissed the libel suit, simply pointing out that the article contained an error.

The two press titles were therefore released.

Ladj Ly's lawyer has announced her intention to appeal.
