After an attack on the New York subway in which almost 30 people were injured on Tuesday, investigators from the American Federal Police (FBI) and the New York Police Department (NYPD) are looking for an apparently mentally disturbed 62-year-old man.

Witnesses had reported how an elderly African American man detonated smoke bombs in a train car during rush hour in the morning in Brooklyn and opened fire on passengers.

Ten people suffered gunshot wounds and around 20 others were injured trying to escape from the shooter.

As police chief Keechant Sewell said on Wednesday night, the perpetrator wore a gas mask, work vest and hard hat during the attack.

Investigators later discovered a pistol, a hatchet, gasoline and firecrackers in the subway.

A credit card and car key eventually led them to a rented moving truck that had been parked in Brooklyn.

The alleged shooter is said to have lived in the van.

Meanwhile, during the investigation, the FBI and NYPD came across disturbing videos of the 62-year-old on social media.

He admitted to being mentally ill and feeling neglected by the New York City Health Department.

In addition, as a black person, he is a victim of racism.

"It's only a matter of time before the white assholes decide that the blacks have to go," the alleged gunman warned of an allegedly imminent race war.

He blamed New York Mayor Eric Adams, among others, for the supposed state of emergency.

There have been violent incidents on the New York subway in recent months.

In January, Asian-American Michelle Go was killed when a homeless man pushed her in front of a train.

In the following weeks, unknown persons stabbed passengers in various attacks.

Mayor Adams, a former police officer, presented a "Subway Safety Plan" to better protect passengers from homeless and mentally ill offenders in the future.
