The Spanish police have discovered the largest cannabis plantation in Europe intended for illegal drug trafficking in the Navarre region.

A total of 415,000 plants were destroyed.

The owners therefore planned to sell their harvest abroad for around 30 million euros, where the plants and buds would be processed into cannabidiol (CBD) and other products, the market value of which would have been around 100 million euros in the end.

Three people were arrested.

The investigation began last year.

The police discovered a total of eleven hemp farms on an area of 67 hectares in Artajona and Olite.

At first it seemed as if the plants were destined for industrial use.

The large investments and final destinations in Switzerland and Italy, themselves known for the production of CBD products but banned in Spain, soon aroused the suspicions of investigators.

Last October, the police in the province of Toledo discovered what was then the largest cannabis plantation.

It was bigger than 15 soccer fields.

The Guardia Civil confiscated 135,000 marijuana plants from a farm.

Benefiting from its Mediterranean climate, more and more cannabis is being cultivated and exported in Spain.

In Catalonia, the police warn of the emergence of a "narco-economy".

According to estimates, more than three million Spaniards regularly use cannabis, which is punished as an administrative offence.
