61 passengers, including children, teenagers and young adults, were on their skiing holiday when the bus in the Traunstein district went off the road and fell down an embankment.

Almost all occupants were at least slightly injured, the police said.

The people who were seriously injured have been released from the hospital.

However, many would still need further medical or therapeutic treatment.

The driver's license was provisionally revoked.

The public prosecutor's office in Traunstein reported early on after the accident that the driver had not exceeded the driving times.

He was said to have been slightly injured in the accident.

According to the police, the bus company is based in Beckum in North Rhine-Westphalia in the Warendorf district.

The company could not initially be reached for comment on Tuesday evening.

Immediately after the accident, the company assured on request that there had been no violations of the statutory rest periods during the journey.

A written statement said that two drivers were used for the journey, with a replacement driver in addition to the main driver.

The people were on their way to a ski holiday in Kaprun, Austria, which is about 70 kilometers further south.

After the accident, hundreds of rescue workers from the region and six helicopters were on site to help the injured and to rescue the bus.
