"The Mediterranean constitutes only 1% of the world ocean. And yet, 10% of the world's biodiversity lives there", explains to Europe 1 Fred Fougea, the director of this series. "Above all, there live endemic species , that is to say, which have developed only in the Mediterranean, like Posidonia, which is a miraculous plant that produces oxygen in large quantities. Like the monk seal. This sea is closed, isolated, special."

A blockbuster that brings together 15 countries

This shooting required four years of work in more than 15 countries, 40 cinematographers, 12 co-directors and 15 co-writers.

This blockbuster makes viewers more aware of the fragility of the ecosystem and the threat to biodiversity in this region of the world.

"In this series, we tell incredible stories about how living things respond to our activities," explains Fred Fougea.

"For 10,000 years, we have been putting intense pressure on this Mediterranean basin. And the animals have adapted, for those who have not disappeared", he continues.

"The message is also what must be done to ensure that living things survive in the Mediterranean. When you leave nature alone, when you decree that a marine area is protected, life comes back in five years. Marine protected areas are a great thing that must be supported by politicians."

Mediterranean, the odyssey for life

consists of 6 episodes of 60 minutes.

The first episodes air Tuesday evening at 9:10 p.m. and are also available on France.tv.
