British people who would like to count penguins and live in Antarctica for a few months can currently apply for a very special job.

The UK Antarctic Heritage Trust, based in Cambridge, is looking for people to work in Port Lockroy for five months over the coming winter – the Antarctic summer.

The former British military base on the Antarctic island of Goudier Island has been a museum since 2006 and is also one of the most remote post offices in the world.

It is the first time Port Lockroy has reopened its doors since the outbreak of the pandemic.

According to a BBC report, around 18,000 visitors came to the remote location every year.

In addition to the colleagues there, penguins keep the seasonal workers company.

The tasks of the team also include the maintenance of the buildings and the operation of the museum shop.

Lauren Elliott, who moved to Antarctica for a season in 2019, described her workplace at the time as "the most magical place on earth" and encouraged interested parties to apply.

"We counted all the penguins when they hatched.

There's a lot of cleaning to do and there's a lot of penguin droppings, which we call 'guano', but I never got bored.” The deadline for applications is April 25th.
