Asphyxiation and poisoning of 77 women in a sewing factory in Jordan

More than 77 women were injured in a sewing factory in Jordan in the Sarhan district of Mafraq Governorate, with suspected cases of poisoning due to chemicals being poured on the floor for the purpose of cleaning, according to a medical source.

Civil defense teams worked to transfer the casualties from the factory to the Mafraq Governmental Hospital, and to King Talal Military Hospital.

The families of the injured girls held the factory management responsible for what happened, stressing that the poisoning injuries were due to mismanagement, and later sources in the factory said that the accident was caused by mixing cleaning materials with chemicals by mistake.

The National Center for Security and Crisis Management said that it is following up, in coordination with the concerned authorities, the "suffocation incident" in one of the Mafraq factories, which resulted in moderate to light injuries, as most cases have left the hospital, while the remaining cases receive treatment according to approved medical protocols.
