Nelly Karim raises controversy... and the National Council for Women in Egypt responds

A scene in the Egyptian series "Faten Amal Harbi", starring the actress Nelly Karim, sparked a wide wave of controversy, calling for a comment from the National Council for Women.

The scene showed that an Egyptian hotel refused to accommodate the character embodied by Nelly Karim in the artwork and her daughters inside one of his rooms, because she is under the age of 40 and without a mahram accompanying her.

The National Council for Women responded, citing that "the complaints office of the National Council for Women confirms that preventing women from staying in hotels alone is a violation of the principles of the Egyptian constitution, and that these actions are nothing but individual behaviors of the people working in these hostels and hotels, and that there is no law, decision or instructions stipulates that."

And he continued in his statement: "The Egyptian Ministry of Interior also published, on its official page on the social networking site Facebook (on June 8, 2021), a press release in which it denied issuing any instructions or decisions for hotels and tourist facilities to prevent women under the age of forty years from residing alone.

The National Council for Women also referred to the "statement of the Ministry of Tourism and the Egyptian Chamber of Tourist Establishments, which states that there are no decisions, instructions, or alerts issued by the Ministry of Tourism or the Chamber of Hotel Establishments regarding preventing women under the age of forty from residing without a mahram."

The series "Faten Amal Harbi" monitors many family issues in Egyptian society, starring Nelly Karim, Sherif Salama, Khaled Sarhan, Mohamed Tharwat and Mohamed El Sharnoubi.
