Two people were killed when the Swiss police attempted to arrest a wanted and armed German.

The wanted person, a 38-year-old German citizen, and his companion were fatally injured in a shootout with the police on Wednesday evening, the Zurich cantonal police said.

The man opened fire on the officers.

The German had been wanted by the police since March 31 because, according to the authorities, he had briefly kidnapped another man in the canton of Zurich.

Until then, the wanted person was not known to the authorities.

On Wednesday he was seen in the Wallisellen community near Zurich, the police said.

Since he had a gun, a special task force was sent to arrest him.

When this approached the wanted person at around 8 p.m., he opened fire.

According to police, the woman who was accompanying him was probably hit and fatally injured at that moment.

The police then shot the man they were looking for.

Both died on the spot.
