Winegrowers around Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet (Côte-d'Or) have organized themselves to protect their production from frost.

They installed towers specially intended to combat the consequences of advective frost on the grapes.

It is a meteorological phenomenon generated by the conjunction of a north wind and a significant mass of cold, explains

.

Two systems in one

This is the first time that such devices have been used in the south of the Beaune coast (Côte-d'Or).

The towers consist of a rotating wind turbine powered by a diesel engine and a boiler fueled with wood pellets.

A tower consumes several hundred kilos of these pellets each night.

The winegrowers also placed candles on the smaller plots.

The antifreeze towers are placed on the largest sites.

“The rear propeller sucks in the hot air and pushes it forward onto the plot, explains a user.

The goal is to dry out the air mass and prevent frost from forming”.
