Five people died when a small truck collided with a passenger train in southern Hungary.

The dead were occupants of the small truck that transported workers, according to the Hungarian rescue service.

The train – a diesel-powered railbus – derailed as a result of the collision and fell off the embankment.

According to this information, eleven passengers suffered injuries.

In addition, two other occupants of the small truck were injured in the accident on Tuesday.

According to the Hungarian railways, the accident happened because the driver of the small truck in Mindszent near the southern Hungarian city of Szeged drove over the unrestricted level crossing despite the red flashing light.

The accident triggered a large-scale deployment of rescue workers.

A rescue helicopter and ten ambulances arrived at the scene.

Fatal accidents at unrestricted level crossings are common in Hungary.

Drivers usually drive on the rails despite the red light.

Sometimes it also happens that the flashing light system fails at a transition.

In connection with the accident, Hungarian Railways emphasized that the flashing light worked in this case.
