The Düsseldorf carnivalists pull the ripcord: the Rose Monday parade, which was postponed to the end of May due to the corona pandemic, is finally cancelled.

The reason is the war in Ukraine.

As the umbrella organization Comitee Düsseldorfer Carneval (CC) announced on Tuesday, they wanted to do without the traditional parade on May 29 because of the suffering "for millions of people".

According to the announcement, the presidents of the affiliated clubs unanimously decided to cancel on Monday evening.

CC President Michael Laumen emphasized that when the train was scheduled, no one expected war in Ukraine.

Another criterion mentioned by Laumen was the recent refusal by WDR to broadcast the move live.

This means that the carnivalists lose a lot of income.

The city leaders have also “expressed concerns about holding the event.”

According to the CC, the group refused to hold a demonstration like the one that took place on Shrove Monday in Cologne.

The traditional parade through the city had also been canceled there because of Corona.

Instead, a more organized - and much smaller - event was planned at the local stadium.

When Russia attacked Ukraine exactly at the start of the street carnival on Weiberfastnacht, the stadium parade was canceled and the peace demonstration on Shrove Monday was announced.

250,000 people ran along.

In Düsseldorf, only a single car by artist Jacques Tilly rolled through the streets on Shrove Monday: an oversized Putin who stuffed Ukraine down his throat.

Motto: "Chok on it!!!" The images of the rolling caricature went around the world.

Actually, the Rose Monday procession, which was postponed because of Corona, should have taken place on May 8th.

The day commemorates the end of World War II.

Only after protests from associations and also pressure from the town hall did the carnivalists move the parade to the historically unencumbered May 29th.

According to the announcement, Carnival President Laumen has now confirmed that in future he will “no longer be automatically guided by external recommendations”.
