Stéphane Bonjean, based in Châteaugay, north of Clermont-Ferrand (Puy-de-Dôme), was forced to "set fire" to protect his Chardonnay.

His golden grape “was further ahead this year,” he told

.

And the weather was not good.

This Monday morning, Météo-France announced that the coldest temperatures since 1947 for a month of April had been recorded during the night.

On a two-hectare plot, Stéphane Bonjean had spread "old bales of damp hay around the vines to produce protective smoke for his crops".

Similar techniques have been used in the Vouvray region (Indre-et-Loire), in Maine-et-Loire, or even in Côte-d'Or, sometimes with candles.

On social networks, images of helicopters flying low over the vines, particularly in Saint-Émilion or in Sauternes, have also circulated:

Some areas of Saint-Émilion use helicopters to fly low over the vines and stir the air.

Objective: to prevent temperatures from dropping too low.

Although it is impossible to estimate the damage at the present time, it should be lower than that of April 2021. Temperatures have fallen less low "and the vegetative stage of the vine would be less advanced than last year" .

Jean Castex nevertheless promised yesterday to help the farmers affected, asking the Minister of Agriculture to mobilize the “agricultural calamities” system.

The Prime Minister also mentioned the opening, if necessary, of an “emergency fund” for the departments most concerned.
