"Culture and Youth" announces the results of the Emirates National Reading Index 2021 survey

The Ministry of Culture and Youth, through a virtual dialogue session entitled “The Emirates National Reading Index… Reading in the Numbers and Results Achieved”, organized as part of the Month of Reading activities, announced the results of the Emirates National Reading Index 2021, which aims to measure the reality of reading practice among members of the UAE community. It contributes to strengthening policies and development plans in the areas of reading and knowledge.

The study sample included more than 3,300 citizens and residents from all emirates of the country, 151 writers, more than 3,000 students, and more than 800 teachers and parents, in cooperation with the Federal Center for Competitiveness and Statistics, in coordination with strategic partners, namely: Abu Dhabi Center for the Arabic Language, University of Zayed, and the Arab Reading Challenge initiative.

And the Emirates National Reading Index 2021 found that the average number of books read annually in the Emirates among writers is 10 books, and six books among adults, while 81.1% of those surveyed indicated that there is encouragement from parents or one of them to read since childhood, while The study found that immigrants from Europe and America are the most encouraging children to read with 88%, followed by Emiratis with 84.9%.

In the field of literature and the literary community, the survey found that the average number of books read by non-Emiratis is 12 books, compared to nine for Emiratis, and that 92.1% of the participants stated that they love reading Emirati literature, and 66.2% of the writers believed that Emirati literature satisfies the readers’ taste and meets the needs of society. 80.1% of them believed that Emirati literature reflects the scene and the cultural and societal movement, and 90.1% of the literary community affirmed that translating and criticizing Emirati literature motivates its reading.

A percentage of 72.8% of them believed that the authorship and publishing movement in the country is able to introduce the literary production of creators and encourage reading their creativity, while the percentage of writers who approved of the ease of access to Emirati literature on digital platforms decreased, reaching 54.3%.

In the field of students’ reading habits and tendencies, the results of the survey showed that the average number of books read annually by students is 12, and that 93.9% of students indicated that there is encouragement from parents or one of them to read since childhood, and 91.2% of students saw that The knowledge and cultural initiatives and projects launched by the UAE encourage the practice of reading, and 74.8% of students revealed that they read from social networking sites daily.
