The number of new corona infections in China has risen to an all-time high.

On Sunday, the national health commission reported 13,146 local infections.

According to official statistics, the majority of cases (11,691) are asymptomatic.

The government, meanwhile, reiterated its adherence to the “zero Covid” strategy.

During an inspection visit to Shanghai on Saturday, China's Vice Prime Minister Sun Chunlan emphasized the "unwavering adherence" to the epidemiological strategy, which provides for rapid curfews, mass tests and quarantine even for smaller infection strains.

Shanghai, the largest city in the country, is still in a nationwide lockdown.

Almost all of the more than 26 million inhabitants are currently only allowed to leave their homes for Covid 19 tests.

Sports stadiums and exhibition halls, each with thousands of beds, have been set up throughout the city to isolate those infected.

Recently, residents of Shanghai have expressed increasing frustration on China's social media about the strict curfews, precarious food supplies and poor hygienic conditions in the quarantine centers.
